Kid Scribes

Kid Scribes is offered in person or via mobile technology (e.g., Skype video or phone chats, Google Docs, etc.) as an after-school, weekend, or summer, digital book-publishing class for children in lower and middle school (grades 2-4 and 5-8). Participants will learn the following:

•The six elements of storytelling

•How to write, revise, and edit a book for digital self-publication

•How to digitally self-publish an actual book

•How to promote their self-published book

•How to present an excerpt from their book at a reading

To varying degrees, based on their age and the availability of their school’s technological resources, kids will be guided through this creative, publishing, and marketing process:

•Writing a story and making their own artwork to accompany that story.

•Once the handwritten stories and artwork are complete, they will be collected, typed, edited, and scanned for desktop publication via www.blurb.com by the instructor. Only students in grades 6-8 may be expected to type and layout their own stories.

•Each kid will have a hard-copy book of her/his own as well as an online portal to sell copies worldwide, if desired. All parents and students in grades 6-8 will receive instructions about how to manage their online bookstore.

•Parents or even older siblings should help each kid, particular kids in grades 2-5, promote her/his book via social media and word of mouth.

Any girl or boy in grades 2-8 who desires to publish her or his own book of fiction or nonfiction is encouraged to attend Kid Scribes, which is conducted in various cities across the U.S.

Our children are natural story-tellers, full of imaginative and inventive ideas. Kid Scribes is a creative space wherein they can learn to fuse their creativity with emerging computer technologies and the Internet to bond with--as opposed to disengage from--their family, friends, and society in a positive, entrepreneurial, and artistic way.

Kid Scribes for Bilingual Students

Kid Scribes is offered as an after-school, weekend, or summer, digital book-publishing program for bilingual children in lower and middle school (grades 3-8). Children who are studying Chinese, French, Spanish, or Swedish will learn the following:

•The six elements of story-telling

•How to write, revise, and edit a bilingual book for digital self-publication

•How to digitally self-publish an actual book

•How to promote their self-published book

•How to present an excerpt from their book at a reading

To varying degrees, based on their age and the availability of their school’s technological resources, kids will be guided through this creative, publishing, and marketing process:

•Writing a story and making their own artwork to accompany that story.

•Once the handwritten stories and artwork are complete, they will be collected, typed, edited, and scanned for desktop publication via www.blurb.com by the instructor. The instructor will also consult with each student’s foreign language teacher to ascertain the accuracy and quality of the foreign language text. Only students in grades 6-8 may be expected to type and layout their own stories.

•Each kid will have a hard-copy book of her/his own as well as an online portal to sell copies worldwide. All parents and students in grades 6-8 will receive instructions about how to manage their online bookstore.

•Parents or even older siblings should help each kid, particular kids in grades 3-5, promote her/his book via social media and word of mouth.

Kid Scribes for Bilingual Students is a creative space wherein children can practice and cultivate an appreciation for their second language (e.g., Chinese, French, Spanish, or Swedish), not to mention English, by writing their own bilingual book of fiction or nonfiction. Furthermore, children will create and possess a “literary passport” that can open the doors to knowledge of other cultures and allow their peers in those cultures to become acquainted with them, even at a distance.
